Elf Movie Party 2022

(Press play, then read.)

Congratulations! If you received this link directly from me, then you are on my 2022 Nice List!* It’s been a rough year for some people–Covid lingering, inflation, recession, etc–and I thank you for being wonderful to me and/or to others around me in 2022!

For the newbies: every year (except 2020 due to Covid**) I treat some people in Austin who made my Nice List to an event that encourages reminds us of the Christmas spirit***: to be nice and spread cheer to everyone. This is my favorite Christmas event in Austin: the Elf Movie Party at the Alamo Drafthouse. To all of you, I say thank you for being wonderful, and I look forward to sharing this event with you. This event is all about the big picture of Christmas (giving, being nice, family/love, etc.) so it’s especially fun with friends. And I hope this event will help you share and spread even more Christmas cheer to the people in your lives throughout December!

This year’s event will be on Thursday, December 1 at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema at Lamar at 7pm. Please RSVP soon because seating capacity is 46 humans and elves (including humans raised by elves) this year. I hope you can make it! Join us, support Alamo, and bring your…

…maximum Christmas cheer!

While Buddy reminds us of the three rules of Christmas and we will adhere to those, we also have three additional event-specific requests for sustaining maximum Christmas cheer. Please:

  1. Arrive well before movie start time, not after it has started (7:30). Meet in The Highball for a bit of liquid cheer as early at 6pm if you want, and theater doors open at 7pm.
  2. Do not have conversations during the movie that lessen the experience for others around you! Quoting and singing along in the Elf Movie Party are encouraged, but don’t be a cotton-headed ninnymuggins. Don’t make me transfer you to my 2022 Naughty List. Dot’ make me call Santa. Don’t make me send you to stay with the South Pole elves.
  3. Let me know if you feel sick or have to cancel for any other reason. I know you’re all vaxed, but Covid variants are lingering and the flu is ramping up (and isn’t any fun, either), and we want to keep everyone healthy and safe.

RSVP by leaving a comment on this page with your name (and whether you’re bringing a partner/date!) and with your favorite Elf quote! If you RSVP but then something comes up, please let me know about cancellations ASAP .

I look forward to sharing this with you on December 1! I also hope you can stay afterward for a(nother) drink at The HIghball!

*There are far more on the 2022 Nice List in Austin than I can invite of course, and some on the list cannot make it. And don’t worry if you’re on Santa’s Naughty List–you’re on my Nice List for 2022!

**We did have a fun backyard showing in 2020–with social distancing!

***Please don’t be offended: I love Christmas for the spirit of giving and kindness, independent of any religious context–of which this movie has none. Well, actually, all of the Christmas symbols in “Elf” (Santa, elves, Christmas trees, etc) are from paganism :-), but the ideas of being nice and generous to each other are shared by every major religion and by most non-religious people as well!
